3 Tips to Help You Get Through a Lifting Plateau

In the perfect world, every day we wear our gym shorts is PR day. Progress would be limitless and all we would have to do to reach it would be to show up. You already know that isn’t the case, but ideally, you’re adding more weight every week, slowly but surely getting closer to your goals. What happens when you don’t see any improvement, you feel uninspired and can’t seem to beat your personal best no matter what you do? It means you’re in a plateau, the gray area between past and future progress.

Athletic Leggings

Some might just keep doing the same thing. They feel that something has to give and eventually, they’ll make progress. This could take weeks or months and when there are better options out there, why not use them? If you’re in a lifting funk or hit a plateau, here are the three things to try.

Crank Up the Intensity

At the top of your plateau-breaking to-do list should be making your muscles work harder. We all get set in our routines which can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, having your routine down pat and making it through the whole workout is great, but if things are too routine or easy, something’s got to change.

A great way to up the intensity is to alter your set-rep scheme entirely. For example, if you currently perform four sets of 10, try increasing the weight and switching to three sets of six. So long as your form is good and your athletic leggings are made for performance, this detour in training should help your muscles work harder and adapt to the heavier weight.

Fill Your Workouts with Effective, Practical Movements

Over time, we all grow out of certain movements; some of us just take longer to realize it than others. At the end of the day, ask yourself whether calf raises are helping you up your squat numbers or if you reached your peak months ago. Swapping calf raises for the leg press machine might do much more good in the end. This is just one example, but chances are there are a few old and tired exercises in your routine you could replace. Consider where your weak points or the exercises that have stalled completely and seek alternatives.

Address Other Parts of Your Wellness Routine

Perhaps the way through the plateau has less to do about lifting and more about your wellness routine as a whole. Specifically, sleep and nutrition play an important role in athletic performance. While you’re probably already aware of this, even the best of us slip up every once in a while. Even if you’re training hard, if you’re not getting high-quality sleep and nutrition, progress will stall eventually. Along with your routine, assess the changes you could make to your diet and sleep.
