How to Start Working Out Early in the Morning

Chances are, if you’re like most, you have that one friend that swears by waking up way too early and working out. While the rest of us are still sleeping, their cross training shoes are laced up and they’re in there doing box jumps, hitting squat PRs or sprinting their heart out. Are they crazy or are they onto something?

If you believe them, waking up super early and working out before the rest of the day offers loads of benefits. They feel energized by the time the rest of their to-do list starts; they feel like the potential for the day is limitless and they have more time after work to do whatever they want.

So, if you decide to give it a try, know that it won’t necessarily come easy for most at first, but with a little time, you could be a 5 a.m. sweat sesh person too.

Come Up with a Plan the Night Before

If you don’t have a plan, even if you make it to the workout, you might waste time figuring out what you want to do, how you’ll get it done and what your goals are for the session all while still trying to wake up. The night before, make sure that you have coached yourself through the upcoming workout. Know what you want to do, how long it’ll take you to do it and what you want to get out of the workout. Along with that, make sure to set out your gym shorts, running shoes and anything else you’ll need in the morning. By doing the work the night before, you’ll reduce any friction the next morning.

Reduce Any Temptations to Fall Back Asleep

Let’s say you do all of the prep work the night before, but once that alarm rings at 5 a.m. for the first time, you slam the snooze button and roll back asleep. Even with the best intentions, most of us wouldn’t trust our waking brains to do the right thing. To avoid this, do something to force yourself out of bed in the morning. Whether it’s putting your alarm clock on the other side of the room or leaving a glass of pre-workout on your nightstand to chug upon waking, don’t give yourself the option to fall back asleep and miss the workout.

Notice the Little Things

Working out first thing, bright and early in the morning, is a challenge. During the first few days, you might wonder if it’s worth it. To help you stay disciplined, pay attention to the little benefits that you notice. Maybe it’s that warm and fuzzy feeling you feel after the workout when you log in to work for the day. Or maybe it’s just the thought of knowing you’ve already done the hardest part of the day. Whatever the case, use these observations as little reminders to keep pushing until the habit fully sticks.
