4 Things You Can Do to Improve Your Endurance

There isn’t a better feeling than knowing that you can run 5 miles without stopping. Or being able to crush an intense workout and hardly needing to rest. High cardio endurance is something that most of us strive for. Whether it’s to help you claim the top spot in an upcoming race or just to feel fitter, if you want to improve your cardio endurance, try these four things.

Get More Muscles Involved

Improving your endurance isn’t all about running, sprinting and jogging. More times than not, including more resistance training to your routine can provide results. Big, explosive movements along with compound lifts can help get more muscles involved, helping to stimulate your cardiovascular system.

Over time, this can have huge effects on your overall endurance. So, instead of having just one or two dedicated cardio days in your routine, try including cardio into your existing strength routine. For example, in between sets of squats and overhead presses, hop on the treadmill and run a mile or just pick up a jump rope and skip for a few minutes.

Don’t Let Your Routine Stagnate

One of the worst things you could do for your endurance is doing the same workouts over and over again. Especially if you’re working on cardio endurance, you’ll need to keep things interesting. Rather than jogging the same 5 miles every week, swap in a HIIT workout instead. Or you can change your cardio exercise altogether, running one week and cycling the next.

Increase the Tempo

If you’re a runner and already have a race pace calculated, try kicking things up a notch during training. While maintaining your consistent pace is crucial come race day, during training or the off season, up the tempo a bit for a shorter duration. It doesn’t have to be much, but for around 20 to 30 minutes, aim to keep your increased tempo. When it comes time to run at your actual race pace, it will feel easier and you might even be able to shave off a few minutes from the total run. Lace up your running shoes and get going.

Make Your Workouts More Fun

If you’ve never liked endurance training to begin with, it’s no surprise that your stamina has remained stagnant. There’s nothing worse than trudging through a workout you don’t enjoy. Instead, find a form of cardio that you genuinely enjoy and don’t mind regularly doing. That might mean lacing up your basketball shoes and hitting the court or it could mean jumping into the deep end and lap swimming twice per week. Whatever the case, if you can find a workout you enjoy, it’ll be much easier to achieve real results.
