4 Ways to Make Your At-Home Workouts More Intense

Let’s be honest; working out in a gym is ideal for most of us. We have all of the equipment our workout could ever require. We have a dedicated space to jump, sprint and move, complete with padding to reduce impact. But what if you can’t work out in a gym? Well, enter the at-home workout. While we might go in with good intentions, there’s no denying that working out in a living room or garage with limited equipment requires a little bit of creativity. If you want to increase the intensity of your at-home workouts with limited equipment, try these four things.

Workout Clothes for Men

Focus on Range of Motion

If you’re used to lacing up your gym shoes and throwing around a ton of weight, your 20-pound dumbbells might not exactly inspire a ton of intensity. While a standard squat or deadlift might not feel the same, if you extend the motion, you can make your muscles work harder for a bit longer. For example, if you’re doing a sumo deadlift, try standing on something, which extends the distance the weight travels from the bottom to the top of the movement. Give it a try and you might be surprised just how much of a difference this small tweak can make.

Slow Things Down

In addition to extending the range of the movement, try to slow the reps down as well. Increasing the time under tension is a trick that bodybuilders have used for decades and the results speak for themselves. The longer that your muscles are under tension, the longer your body will be working.

As an example, instead of doing a squat in a quick down-up motion, aim to extend the descent and ascent by a few seconds with a pause at the bottom. Your body will be in a weaker position during the pause as your muscles work to maintain your balance and support the weight. Plus, going slow forces you to be more honest with your form, with little room for sloppy execution.

Split Up Your Leg Movements

If you enjoy doing glute bridges, Romanian deadlifts, squats or any other leg movement, this is a tip for you. If you’re stuck with weights lighter than you’re used to, don’t just do the same two-legged, bilateral movement and modify it to hit one leg at a time. This type of unilateral training can not only put more weight focus on one leg, but it can also highlight any imbalances you might have developed over time.

Take It Seriously

Finally, you can read all of the tips in the world, but if you don’t bring the intensity yourself, you’ll struggle to keep making gains. Every time you put on your workout clothes for men or women, get your mind ready to give it your all. The workout is as intense as you make it so get in there and get going.
