Mid-Year Checkpoint: How Are Your New Year’s Fitness Goals Coming?

It feels like just yesterday we were jotting down our New Year’s Resolutions, but then life happened. Have You Already Crossed Off a Few Goals?

Having a goal to strive for will keep you dedicated to your training regimen, but what if you’ve already achieved a goal early? This is why the first place to start is with the goals you’ve already achieved. If you set out to run an 8-minute mile at the start of the year and reached that mark last month, cross it off and put your efforts into something else.

Most of the time, this means that either the bar was set too low to begin with or it’s a testament to your drive to succeed. Whatever the case, identify the goals you’ve achieved or are close to achieving, raise the bar, lace up your gym shoes and get after the next fitness goal.

Which Goals Are Still Achievable?

After refining the goals you’ve achieved, it’s time to look at the ones still in progress. Some of these might be ongoing, such as drinking a gallon of water every day or running 10 miles every week. Others might have moved to the back burner since January. Are you even still interested in squatting a certain amount of weight? Be honest with yourself because if you really aren’t excited about the goal, you won’t be excited about the training. There’s nothing wrong with acknowledging something you’re no longer interested in.

On the other hand, if you are still interested in the goal, consider where you currently are and if it’s realistic to achieve the goal by the end of the year. If it is, turn up the heat, move it to the top of your priorities and make it happen. Sometimes taking an honest look at these backburner goals is what you need to kick into action.

Are You Set Up for Success?

Now that you know which goals you’ve achieved, which ones you aren’t chasing anymore and which ones you need to focus on, think about how you can set yourself up for success. Is your routine tailored towards strength training? Are you running enough to hit your target range and pace by the end of the year? What about your workout gear? You want to eliminate any obstacles between you and your goals.
