Is It Time for a New Workout Routine? 3 Ways to Tell

Once you’ve gotten past the beginner stages of working out, if you’re like most, you get set in a strict routine. You lace up your gym shoes and do squats on Mondays, run on Tuesdays and so on and so forth. Getting into a set workout regimen is how you get results, but what if it’s time to switch? Should you throw it all out the window and try something new or will you lose all of the progress you’ve worked for? There are no right or wrong answers, but there are a few signs to look out for that could signal that change is in the air.

You Have Your Eyes Set on Different Things

No matter how difficult or long-term a goal might be, eventually you’ll reach it. Maybe you’ve spent years training to reach a certain marathon finishing time or set off at the start of your lifting career to one day bench 315 pounds. Whatever the case, once you reach a specific goal, it’s time to find a new one and that one might be miles different than the last. If so, it’s time for a different routine. For some, it might be just a slight alteration, while others might move to a different activity altogether. Whatever the case, it’s okay to acknowledge when your goals are changing and your current routine isn’t cutting it.

Results Aren’t Coming as Easily Anymore

You’re well past the beginner gains stage, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be making weekly, monthly and yearly progress. At a certain point, whether it’s because of a lack of inspiration or just programming, we all hit a wall. Some keep working and push through it, but others go around the wall through a new regimen. If you do not see the results you’re after, whether it’s becoming faster, improving your stamina or getting stronger, it’s time to adapt your training style. Maybe it means lacing up your cross training shoes and adding some speed work to your routine or a different program altogether. Results aren’t everything, but they can keep you motivated and training for the long haul.

It Just Feels Like It’s Time

Every once in awhile, we all get that weird feeling that something isn’t working. We’re not stoked to leap out of bed to go do 200 burpees or sprint around the track. Maybe you’d rather lift something heavy for a few reps or pace yourself for a distance run. Whatever the case, don’t deny your body what it craves. If you feel like you’re in a funk or just over your current workout routine, try something new. Whether it’s a routine your friend can’t stop raving about or swapping in more core work to fill in the gaps, life’s short so don’t wait. You can always go back to your other routine if you miss it.
