4 New Year’s Resolutions for Aspiring Basketball Stars
With the new year quickly approaching, most of us are thinking about what we’d like to accomplish. If you’re a basketball fan, whether it’s a form of cross training for you or you have serious aspirations, you should be thinking about how you’ll improve. The perfect way to optimize your training routine and ensure you’re productive every time you lace up your basketball shoes is to set resolutions. Here are a few to try.

Make Your Free Throws as Automatic as Possible
No matter how good a professional player might be, we’ll often remember
if their free throws are hit or miss. The best players will not only be
able to make incredible trick shots, but they can also hit any free
throw any day of the week.
While you might never be perfect, being consistent in your free throw
shooting should be the ultimate goal. That means that every time you
train, you must practice free throws. Some days might be dedicated to
them, but for the most part, aim to hit a couple dozen during the
cool-down portion of your workout.
Feel Comfortable From Every Spot on the Court
Another resolution you need to make is to work on your accuracy and
range from every part of the court. If you intend to join a league at
some point, you won’t always have the comfort of shooting exclusively
from your favorite spot. The earlier you recognize this and train your
shot from every spot, the sooner you can improve your overall game.
Don’t hit the court and go to the same side or spot on the court.
Instead, try to go around the court and hit shots. You might not make
them all at first, and you might still be better from a certain distance
or angle. Regardless, by merely challenging yourself to try new shots,
you’ll see improvement in all your shots over time.
Stop Ignoring Aspects of Your Game
Look, very few of us are 100% perfect basketball players. We all have
our strengths and our weaknesses. With that in mind, there are far too
many players even in the pro leagues that have glaring weaknesses that
can be exploited or put them at a disadvantage. Rather than focusing on
only improving your strengths, don’t let your weaknesses become even
worse.
So, if you’re not great at distance shots, make it a priority to improve
them, even if just slightly. The same is true if you’re bad at one side
of the court. Eventually, you’ll need to play lock-down defense, so
it’s better to start improving now than later.
Cross Train to Improve Your Performance
Finally, not all training needs to happen on the court. Being a great
basketball player is often about having great cardio endurance, speed
and strength. While you can build these on the court, you can make
faster progress with other exercises. So, throw on your track pants
and go for a run or hit the weight room to build some strength.
Whatever you do, make this the year that you start training like a pro,
even if you’re just playing to have fun.
